In the south of the Dominican Republic is the capital Santo Domingo. It is located only about 30 km from the Las Americas International Airport. In Santo Domingo, rich culture and history are juxtaposed with modern developments. With over three million inhabitants, the cosmopolitan city is possibly the liveliest place in the entire Caribbean. In the historic Zona Colonial, newer hotels line the old cobblestone streets; luxury cars share the roads with horse-drawn carriages; an avant-garde international gastronomic scene lives amid classic Creole cuisine; and 21st-century buildings stand next to historic old buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries.
