Tour details
Day 1 - Pickup hotel ⇒ Trek to Cachote
Drive from your hotel in an ECOTOUR vehicle to Paraíso, a village between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea.
The hike begins on the “Café de las Mujeres” trail and leads across agricultural land and coffee plantations. Enjoy lunch in the small community of Charco Blanco (900 m difference in altitude). Continue to the cloud forest of Cachote (1100 m), an enclave of the Bahoruco National Park (Biosphere Reserve).
Visit the botanical trail and fish pond. At the end of the day, enjoy a meal with the villagers and enjoy the unique, fresh climate of the region before the sounds of the mountain lull you to sleep. Overnight stay in a shelter or tent. Hiking time 6 hours, altitude 1100 m (uphill), high level of difficulty.
DAY 2 - Trek Cachote ⇒ Polo
Walking time 7 hours, altitude difference of 700 meters (uphill, downhill), medium difficulty.
Set off in the direction of Polo after a big breakfast. Walk along a path strewn with flowers to the river Cortico (300 m), then uphill to the small village of Auta. The magnificent view will draw you to the opposite slope of the Sierra Bahoruca and to La Mina (an old silica mine). Short break in the house of a Montea Nueva family (1000 m).
Continue downhill towards Polo, passing an eerie prison built by Rafael Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1961. Wait on the road that leads to the only town in the Sierra Bahoruco for the bus that will take you uphill to Polo. Enjoy a warm welcome and a home-cooked dinner from Mama Gueda, the head of the village cooperative. In the evening, retire to your night's accommodation in a house, hotel or shared dormitory.
DAY 3 - Trek Polo ⇒ Paraiso
Hiking time 5 hours, altitude difference 900 m (downhill), low level of difficulty.
After breakfast, hike up the “Caña Brava” (200 m) and enjoy a great view over the valley that will lead you to Paraíso. Descend to the “Mata de Maíz” basin (700 m). This is the source of the “Rio Nizaito”, a river whose course we will follow for the rest of the day.
